1963 Studebaker Avanti
In 1963 South Bend, Indiana, was well known for being the home of the University of Notre Dame and the Studebaker. Just before Christmas, in a move that surprised everyone, the last Studebaker made in the United States rolled off the assembly line and the massive factory buildings that were so important to the local economy closed forever. The demise of the Studebaker came despite a last ditch effort to spruce up the product line with the new and very sporty Avanti. The Avanti was conceived and designed in a record time and introduced at the New York Auto Show in April 1962. In August of 1962, Andy Granatelli set 29 speed records with an Avanti at the Bonneville Salt Flats. This particular Avanti has undergone a body off restoration.
